Heeling is Healing, discover your own writing voice while sailing.
Just like in sailing we surrender to the wind in writing you have to surrender to the voice of your inner self and learn to harness that energy.

During this sailing cruise you will be living in close quarters with other writers, purpose: to get work done. It doesn't matter if you are a beginner or an old salt, we all learn new things and we all have molds to break and rules to disobey.
During this writing class you will stay two nights on the boat. At anchor and underway you will discover, discuss, set goals, eat and drink. I use the journal method. Every participant receives a journal with the purpose of using it for drawing, journaling, doodling, doing exercises.
One the weekday writing classes I will focus on one specific form, poetry, short story, performance, journalism, memoir, or something you might want to work on. The weekday class includes one overnight stay on the sailing boat.
Custom classes are meant for people who want to learn how to be a creator. I will help you find your edge and teach you the basics of storytelling through the medium you prefer. We will do this using the sailing experience as a base and use writing as a tool to create.
My birth name is Gerhardus, but you can call me G. I have been sailing since I was a teenager. I totally fell in love with sailing and being on the water. I have taught sailing for many years, worked as a deck hand on a freighter, performed in a kayak performance troupe, and worked as a captain. As a writer my resume is just as varied: I have degrees in journalism and playwriting. I work as a free lance journalist and playwright. I have written short stories, a novel, screenplays and wrote and performed my own poetry.
Every time people tell me about how passionate they are about reading and that it is their dream to write my response is:
Do it! Why wait?
From all the activities you can do in life writing is the cheapest and the most satisfying - says he who is biased.
I am going to make you feel comfortable with pen and paper and teach you that your voice and your story are what’s it about. Since language is a shared medium with rules and conventions I will also teach you how to be your own critic, and how to break rules. The objective is to help you take the first step in becoming a writer.
Elske's home port is Summit North Marina in Bear, DE. We will leave around hight tide and will come back with the tide as well. The destination is the Chesapeake Bay where we will anchor and spend the night. Where exactly we will drop anchor depends on current and wind. Elske is a safe and trustworthy vessel capable of withstanding heavy weather, however, if a hurricane occurs we will stay in port until the storm blows over and then continue our quest.
The empty page is the ultimate human challenge.
Elske is an aluminum 46 foot cutter designed by McCurdy & Rhodes and built in 1986 in the Netherlands. There are five bunks, two in the v-berth in the bow, two in the stern cabin and one in the main cabin. There are two heads and one kitchen. Guests are not required to lend a hand in the sailing operation of the vessel, but helpt will be appreciated. Anyone on a vessel underway is however to maintain proper lookout.
Meal preparation, the making of coffee and tea, is something we will have to take turns in doing.
There are clean sheets for all the beds and there are blankets, feel free to bring a sleeping bag. Please use soft bags for your luggage there is no space to stow suitcases. I also have towels.
Sign up to get invitations to events and performances.
I can show you what it looks like, I can tell you what it looks like, but I can't show you how it feels to be connected to the main sources of life: water, air, sun light. What are you waiting for? Call me: 1(856)261-167
